Who can join Cub Scouts?

Boys and girls in grades K-5 are invited to join Cub Scouts.

What is a Pack?  Den?  Rank?

The Pack is what we call all of our Scouts.  Dens are small groups, typically organized by grade and gender.  Each grade is a rank and is associated with an animal or a symbol:

• Kindergarten = Lion

• 1st Grade = Tiger

• 2nd Grade = Wolf

• 3rd Grade = Bear

• 4th Grade = Webelos (Webelos I)

• 5th Grade = Arrow of Light (Webelos II)

What is the deal with the uniform?

There are two types of uniform: 

1. Field Uniform ("Class A") - this is the one most people think of when they think of Scouts.  We provide the neckerchief and ask parents to purchase the shirt/numerals .  There are many options available to purchase (even fancy socks!) but our Pack does not require more than the shirt and provided neckerchief.  This uniform is worn to Pack meetings and possibly some Den meetings - ask your Den Leader what is expected.

2. Activity Uniform ("Class B") - this is any Scouting t-shirt.  Each year we will have an opportunity to purchase a new Pack t-shirt for all Scouts and family members.  Scouts often wear them to outdoor activities where we may get dirty (camping/hiking) and to school to show off their Scout spirit!

What is the expected time commitment?

Scouting is a flexible year round activity - we understand if you are busy with another activity and have to miss sometimes.  We do ask that our Scouts attend the monthly pack meeting (1 hour) and their monthly den meeting (1 hour).  Some dens may have more than one meeting a month to meet their advancement requirements - these requirements can also be completed as homework with your child.  Our pack also offers service activities, family fun events and fundraising activities.  The more you put in - the more you get out!  Our leaders spend a few extra hours a month planning the fun activities.

How much does this all cost?

Required Costs:

To become a Cub Scout, you must register at online and pay Michigan Crossroads Council $180.  That registration cost helps support our Scout camps, leader trainings, background checks, and other costs at the national level.

Our Pack also collects $40 in dues each Fall and Spring.  Those dollars help our Pack cover awards, belt loops, patches, neckerchiefs, and hats for Scouts.

Optional Costs:

Overnight and special activities typically cost around $150 per year total.  This cost fluctuates for a number of factors and is a total for multiple events.

Summer Camp, also known as Cub Advancement Camp, costs $180 per person and this covers all activities and food.

A Class A Uniform Shirt currently costs $35 at the Scout Store.  Class B Uniform Shirts are purchased from a local supplier.
